Reflection:
The portrait photography that I chose to display was Cindy Sherman. She was born on January 19, 1954 in Glen Ridge , New Jersey. She studied at Buffalo State University and grew up taking photographs all her life. Cindy took many of her photos by herself and working alone in her own element instead of working with others on her work. She raised challenging questions about the role and representation of women in society. When people looked at her photos she wanted to raise questions and curiosity regarding a women's role in society. My photographer is not a commercial photographer she is simply just an artist. Cindy did not work for anyone specific , she had her own studio and she created her own work. Sherman's main subjects were typically photographing herself in costumes and accessories portraying different characters of women. I chose this artist because I found her photos very intriguing and captivating to look at. I chose the library photo because it gave a sense of mystery and the setting was possible for me to recreate so I knew that was the photo I must choose. To emulate this photo I created the same lighting which I had to put the photo in photoshop to edit the dark and light spots. I also had to edit the contrast and brightness to match the original and decided to shoot the same mood. I was the subject of the photo, and matched the expression of the subject in the other photo. I created the same setting also taking the photo in a library and having the same accessories in the photo.
The photographer employed a fast shutter speed and large depth of field to create a completely in focus no blur picture. The angle of the camera was taken from below and shooting up. The photo is symmetrical balanced and the photo meets the guidelines of the rule of thirds. The girls arm is lining up exactly along the rule of thirds line, which makes the photo balanced. The clear focal point would be the girl in the photo , when you glance at this photo your eye immediately gets drawn to the mysterious girl looking away. The subject of the photo is completely evident and there is no real distraction to the audience. This photo is vertical , and it makes this photo the most effective because it shows how high the book shelves are and if the photographer shot it horizontal it wouldn't display the same effects. The photographer framed the photo to create a sense of depth with foreground and background. Some of the books are seen closer then the girl is seen a bit more distant. There are many leading lines in the photo , such as the book shelves and the books themselves.
The photo is an original composition because I have never seen any photos really capturing this kind of theme. The subject matter is very compelling because the girls eyes in the photo really ask the audience "what is she looking at?" and create an intriguing element to the photo. The point of view is very uncommon, most photos are taken from below and are shooting up . The mood of this photo is completely interesting and creates a sense of mystery by the black and white colors and the girl's face expression also portrays this.
One of the differences between these photos would be the lighting. The lighting in the emulated photo is a bit darker and their are differences regarding the model in each other. Each model has different elements such as hair color, type of shirt and the book shelf setting is a bit different also. The subject in the photo I emulated represents the same mood and setting within the original photo taken. My emulated photo has the same face expression and releases the same emotion and also has the same exact posture given in the photo.
