Janie - She was a young seventeen year old girl that was put on her own to succeed through life. Her mother was an alcoholic so from the start so she was shaped into an independent girl just trying to get through high school. Janie would walk through the door and " walk by her mother who is on the couch watching a show and drinking from a clear glass bottle." ( Page 7) She wasn't an ordinary girl though, she had the deepest darkest secret throughout the entire town which was that she was a dream catcher. If you were a certain distant from Janie and were sleeping, she would be paralyzed and blinded within seconds and sucked into the dreams. In her dreams people would be screaming for her help and she could not do anything but just watch. She then began to realize how to control her dreams better by the help of Miss Stubin. Janie could see almost anyone's dreams and she often told Cabel 'If you don't want me to see I guess, don't sleep in the same room as me."( page 57) Janie was put to the test multiple times by showing how strong she really is. She had to stay strong with every emotional break down she had about Cabel and being left behind by many social events. Also her dreams took a very big toll on her mentally and physically , she would sometimes be passed out for hours stuck in a strangers dream and having no idea how to get out. She was a static character , she never had really changed throughout the entire story. But she also was a round character , Janie was very complex and her moods had changed throughout the entire story depending on what dream she had been sucked into. Janie was not really a dependable character , she was emotionally unstable and usually all over the place either in a dream or dealing with her mother at home or figuring herself out with Cabel.
Cabel - In the book he was seen as a mysterious character to start off. He was a dynamic character because in the middle of the plot , his entire character changes. He starts off as a more shy and anti social character , that is always seen off in the distance. He is not approachable in the beginning and has a reputation of being a pot head in the high school. Carrie had described him as " black hair hanging in greasy ringlets in front of his eyes and he walks with his shoulders curved and stood away from everyone and smoked a cigarette."(Page 29) Little did anyone know that this kid lived a double life basically. There was really no background given about his home life and his family members being there for him. He mostly was on his own , and left to do his own thing. The next year Cabel comes in with a completely a different side. His hair is cut , he is dressed well , he has a completely new attractive look that gets all of the girls attention the second he steps into the school. Cabel begins to be looked at in the hallways , not being shoved in a locker. He grew to be about six feet tall also and very muscular compared to his weak structure in the past. His double life was soon to be found out that he was an undercover cop. He was trained to detect the drug dealers at the parties and at school to help a huge bust to go through it. Cabel was already busy enough with his job he also began to fall in love with Janie , and couldn't resist her at all. He couldn't keep his mind off her ,thinking day in and day only about her. Cabel was also a round character because he was very complex changing identities throughout the story.
Carrie - She was the other side of Janie , her number one companion that was always there for her. While Janie was having a hard time fighting with Cabel , she was right over her house in seconds. She was one of the most kind characters in the book , she wasn't like the rest of the girls that filled the halls of the high school. She was very wealthy and had just moved into the town. She became friends with all of the snotty rich girls but she was different to Janie. She was not like the rest of them , she treated people nicely and didn't judge. Those qualities were what made Janie her best friend. She was a very dependable friend that anyone could have been lucky to have. She was a blonde girl ,who was very popular and friends with everyone in her school. Carrie is nothing compared to the other girls and when Janie mentioned of her being like them she replied with " I'm not like Melinda at all , I just hang out with her because she rich and shrugs her shoulders. "(page 30). Carrie is a very flat character, there is not that much to her she is just a very simple character represented in the story. She also is a static character because she does not change throughout the novel.
